A quick video showing the startup of a 1949-vintage Terry (Impulse) steam turbine, used to power an induced-draft fan for one of our boilers at my power plant in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This is a disappearing institution since the turbine drive is due to be replaced with an electric motor.
This turbine uses 200 psi steam at 600 deg. superheat and exhausts into the 35 psi header. In earlier years this was part of the plants overall heat balance with the 35 lb. steam being used for feedwater heating and other purposes. As the plant has evolved, the need for this has gone away and the turbines are now not really needed.
The turbine, which runs at a relatively high speed, drives a reducing gear (which is what most of the noise comes from when it starts) that will likewise be eliminated when the electric drive replaces it. That drive’s secondary gear powers the fan’s large squirrel cage. The induced draft fan runs slightly ahead of the forced draft, creating a slightly negative pressure in the furnace.
